Gangrape of a Swedish woman streamed on Facebook Live, perpetrators arrested

Three men have been arrested on the allegation of raping a woman in Sweden, an incident that was broadcast on Facebook Live. The incident was reported by a woman, earlier on 23 January, who was part of a closed Facebook group where the Facebook Live video was broadcast, according to a report in BBC.

Police in Swedish city of Uppsala have confirmed that the footage was seen by them. According to the woman who reported the incident, 21-year old Josefine Lundgren, around 60 people were viewing the video as it was being broadcast. The closed group she was part of has over 1000 members.

According to BBC, the police has confirmed that three men between 19 and 25 years of age allegedly assaulted and raped a woman in a local apartment. These men have been arrested.

Online witnesses claim to have seen a second video which was broadcast later, where the same woman in question denies being raped. But there are speculations whether this was done out of her own free will, as according to Swedish broadcaster, the men were shooting the follow up video when the police arrived to arrest them.

According to Facebook, Live content will be reviewed according to its Community Standards. Content that is graphic or violent in nature will not be a premise to take it down.

“One of the most sensitive situations involves people sharing violent or graphic images of events taking place in the real world. In those situations, context and degree are everything,” said Facebook.

According to the social media giant, live videos shared to raise awareness about a shooting or any violent incident, irrespective of their graphic nature, will be allowed as the aim of the person streaming it live is to spread awareness and hopefully help catch culprits. But if a live video mocks the victim or celebrates the shooting, then that will be taken off.
