Twitter to introduce Explore tab containing Moments, live video and trending topics

Twitter has announced that it is going to replace the Moments tab with a new Explore tab, that contains Moments, live video and trending topics. Moments are collections of tweets around a topic put together by users that tell a story. Moments is a relatively new feature, and Twitter allowed users to start creating and sharing moments from their mobile devices only recently. The current Moments tab shows the most popular Moments on top.

The search feature allows users to actively find tweets around a topic of interest. The search page keeps getting updated with the latest tweets related to that search. The trending topics tab shows the hottest discussions on Twitter, usually activity around a hashtag that has gone viral. Twitter is consolidating the different ways to navigate Twitter into one handy tab known as Explore. The Explore tab will contain trending topics, search, Moments as well as the most engaging live video content.

The Explore tab has been introduced to select users on a test basis, and Twitter research shows that users like the new tab. The Explore tab is going to be introduced to iOS users first, and is expected to land on the Android version of the app in the next few weeks. Users need the latest version of the Twitter application to use the feature. No existing feature is being pulled, and Twitter will continue to take feedback to improve the way content is presented on the platform.

Twitter is testing out various ways to present content before wider rollout. These include an in case you missed it (ICYMI) module that shows missed tweets from accounts users most engage with and a best friends forever (BFF) module that highlights tweets from a single account that Twitter thinks a user would not want to miss. Live video on the platform is also getting a top level push, Twitter has signed content contracts with sports broadcasters and live streamed the inauguration of Donald Trump. Recently, Twitter also introduced Live 360 degree videos. The replies view now has ranked Tweets, with higher quality conversations given prominence.

The series of changes are measures to push more users to get on the platform. Twitter has been struggling financially because the user growth has plateaued. Despite a number of bright minds on the platform, and a micro-blogging service that is built around the way millenials consume content, Twitter is failing. After a series of high profile exits, Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter, is getting increasingly isolated in trying to push Twitter towards profitability.
